About weeds and our Fig tree and Apples

What an improvement!  After attacking the weedy mess that is my garden with a string trimmer and rake, I can now look at it without being depressed.  The main weed is pink knotweed - really nasty stuff, that.  My plan is to cover all of the garden save the two rows I just dug for garlic with landscaping fabric in hopes of smothering whatever greenery I missed.

On to the fig tree....no figs this year because the deer browsed it heavily over the winter.  We love figs (esp. when they find their way into Ocracoke fig cake!) - so the tree is now fenced in for the winter.  Fingers crossed for at least some kind of crop next year!

Apples - we love 'em, but not the store bought red and yellow delicious and Granny Smiths.  There is a great company in Michigan - Tree-Mendus fruit - that carries a large selection of apples, many of them hard to find heirlooms.  If you've never eaten a Hoople's Antique Gold, Esopus Spitzenberg, Melrose or Holiday, you've not eaten an apple.  We got our annual shipment from them earlier this week and are enjoying them immensely!  It is a bit late in their season, but give them a try - you can actually request heirloom sampler packs, which are a great way to learn about the incredible variation of f

Autumn to-do list....

10/20/2009

The end of the growing season really sneaks up on you!  And the typically overwhelming end of season to-do list starts to form up (as the energy level and ambition goes the way of the day length and the temperature!)...

All of these "MUST DO" items - such as

Dig up or prepare plants to be saved through the winter in the garage - tender perennials (like lantana and geraniums) and herbs (like the lemon verbena and bay plants)
Toss dead plants...eggplant, tomatoes, peppers...in the driveway pots
Weed enough of the big garden to plant the garlic I just got in from Johnny's Selected Seeds (I am a garlic growing virgin), and fix the fence to keep deer out of the blueberry plants over the winter
Put some fencing around our poor little fig tree, which gets browsed heavily by the deer each winter (hence has yet to give us one fig as punishment)

That's enough to keep me out of trouble for awhile!
