All this continuing warm weather, and my rapid progress, could impact availability date for seedlings - watch this blog, as well as the 2012 From The Vine seedlings page.
Some pics later on or tomorrow.....you should see the lettuce and greens!
Short blog because I am crazy busy. Hot Peppers, Eggplant, Tomatillos, and half of the Sweet Peppers are now partially transplanted. My aim is to finish the sweet peppers later today, and move on to tomatoes and basil tomorrow. This is just crazy - last year I didn't start transplanting tomatoes until March 27!

Today I got a good bit through hot peppers....by the end of tomorrow, I hope to have those finished, as well as eggplant and tomatillos. I've revised my transplanting plans a bit this year, focusing on getting 6 of each variety into 3 inch pots to start (with more of the most popular tomatoes). This way I can ensure that at least a few of each will be available as soon as they size up.
Is there a flip side to "the good news"? Not really - except there is a LOT of transplanting to do! If this warm weather holds, the seedlings should adjust pretty quickly and get to a good size faster. I am still thinking early to mid April for most things being available, but the date should only move earlier over time - just stay tuned. Of course, starting extensive transplanting so early is a risk - if the cold, and frosty nights, return, there will be lots of relocation of flats from the driveway to the garage! It is still a bit soon to update the From The Vine variety page; as I complete each category, I will get to it - so tomorrow night I will make any necessary revisions to the hot peppers, eggplant and tomatillos. It is still too soon to transplant basil. But I did start Cukes and Watermelon today (this is ridiculously early for such things, but the weather is dictating it!). Just a general update....all seeds are now planted for the coming season, including those for all of my mini-projects involving tomatoes, eggplant and hot and sweet peppers. (well, not quite - I am going to plant a flat of fill-ins for low germinating varieties, and I've also yet to do cukes other than Diva, watermelons, and some quick growing annuals like Zinnias).
The weather is just amazing....we took a walk through the Raulston arboretum the other day and the Magnolia, Redbud and flowering fruit trees were just spectacular. Our own flowering cherry is just about ready to burst into bloom. As tempting as it sounds to start putting out tomato plants, it is simply too early (according to the calendar) - and my plants are just infants. However, I am about to start transplanting into the individual pots - perhaps today. Early to mid April remains my target date for seedling availability. But do keep a watch on this blog, as well as the 2012 From The Vine seedlings page, for latest developments. Off to play with the seedlings!..... I am finding it is not easy to blog and garden at the same time....things are really busy now. I am still planting (Dwarf tomatoes and hot peppers remain - three more plug flats to go). I am transplanting - beets, greens, spinach, chard are done, and lettuce is underway. As usual, it is an exciting time of the year in the life of the gardener!
And as always, pictures are far better than words - see below. Top row - all seedlings, peppers and eggplant, tomatoes Middle - herbs, closeup hot peppers, closeup eggplant Bottom - closeup tomatoes, lettuce, transplanted beets and greens |
